Hello? Is anybody there?

I haven't disbanded the blog; it isn't dead. It is in need of defibrillation, though.

I've realized that I can't be acidic as I want (not because I've seen the light or the art of living or whatever), thanks to people, including, a parent, guessing my identity. Thanks, C.

So.

I had to blog today, because I had another viva in Orthopaedics, which wasn't atrocious. Not as bad as the last one. I was almost happy, until my Professor suggested I take it up for my PG, as there are so few female orthopaedicians, and that I was built for it. Being built to wield a mallet and bone chisel? Not the best thing.

I still wish I was at Fruit Shop, with a Jughead's Special, but not as much. Being a doctor? Not a bad prospect. Not as bad as being a medical student, at any rate.

OK. Done being pink, fluffy, happy. For the week. Cut that. Month.

Yay. I posted.

Of Medicine, Medicine and Medi-freaking-cine.

Since I've been called Grumpy/Grot/Droopy in various languages for a long time now, I've got to set the record straight.

Blogging is therapeutic, almost spiritual for me. If you happen to ask around at my college, what my peers would probably say about me was that I was a cheerful, bubbly girl who whoo-hoos at every given opportunity. I am that. But the adolescent part of me, it never dies. That angst, that rebellious drive surfaces way too many times and that is when I bid Adieu in the most sugarcoated voice I can summon up so as to not blow my cover, and instead, I blog.

Modern-day Clark Kent I am, only my Superman avatar wears hideous pajamas and scribbles furiously in a journal or calls up similarly-inclined friends and people-bashes. When I'm at college, I throw away my 2000-page Surgery text and hide myself behind the monitor and type away. This is my comforting foetal postion (way more comforting than my mother's womb, anyway).

This blog is a sincere appeal for all those who ever plan on taking up a 7-year-but-feels-like-a-gazillion-years course of MBBS.
This is my fifth year in this course, and I can tell you that IT SUCKS. Don't EVER take it. Even if you are a masochist. Wear a cilice. Commit death by slow starvation. Slowly pull out your fingernails using an artery forceps. DO NOT TAKE MBBS.

Your life will be redefined. You will cease to be a human being. You're a medical student. That's all you are.
Your happiness would be scoring 50% in your daily internal assessment (minimum needed to qualify write the exams). You will be juggling 14 subjects for 6 years, and mostly let them all slip.
You will have to write case histories, perform various tests with ease and MUG up humongous amounts of material. Humongous. In a matter of hours.
Occasionally, you can eat. Maybe treat yourself to a little nap. Whoo hoo. Thoo, thoo, more like.

Fine. Why do I sound so venomous?

I just screwed up my Orthopaedics viva. I could not list out all the clinical features of a Colle's fracture. And my sir had no qualms about saying that even a 2nd year student could breeze through that.

All I want is to a nurse a Jughead's Special in the fruit-scented, air conditioned environment of Fruit Shop on Greams Road. Is that too much to ask for?

It apparently is. I'll be going now. Got an exam on Diabetes in Pregnancy in a couple of hours. Whoo hoo!

Why Blogger is a Pain In The Ass (PITA) - a critical overview.

Newspaper supplements are now dime-a-dozen. The main paper looks starkly anaemic, once these supplements slide out, in all their million-colour glory.

And I'm still addicted to them. Jessica Alba's baby showers. A chronological look at Dhoni's hairstyles. Slapstick articles on Chennai's auto-kaars. Yes, yes, yes.

One of the reasons why Blogs don't have that kind of appeal anymore. Because supplements are available on your doorstep, no WiFi, no Username/Password required. And you can read them on your train journeys (a very important prerequisite).

Now that the excuses are out of the way.

I blog now, for the sake of Refuge. Results are going to be posted any minute now. Two floors down, in the Lounge, for all to see and mock.

The pass percentage for my juniors was roughly around 32%. Such is Medical Education.

When Life crashes around you, you can do little but sit down and laugh. At least, that is how it works for me.

Scenario 1:
Dad/Paediatrics HOD/Misc. Authority figures: You have immensely disappointed me/let us down very badly/Didn't expect this from you of all people..
Moi: *Giggle* I'm sorr- *Snort*

Scenario 2:
Lame-ass loser classmate: *Hoots/Grunts/Catcalls as I walk past* Or asks intelligent questions like "Ethana maasam?" when I ask the Professor to excuse me from class on the account of nausea/claustrophobia.
Moi: Asshole. *Laugh*

My mobile is ringing. Presumably, with news of the Results. Nobody would call if I flunked, right? Who wants to be the bearer of bad news? Especially, to me?

Anywhoo.

I do not want to pick it up. If I pretend Results don't exist, they'd just go away. And I can continue surfing the Skinny Website. At least, for the next 5 minutes.

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head...

So you'd think I'd be happy (at long, long last!) if it rained in Madras, right?
So wrong.

Not searching for an excuse to moan at the big bad world.

Imagine a toothache/massive sinusitis, dirty rain water splashed by a presumably-blind motorcyclist on your patialas and handling 3 pregnant women in one morning.

Currently going through a writer's/thinker's block. Also I am not at the heights of mania or depths of depression, and hence obviously can't write. (Yes, Hemingway is one of my favourite role-plays).
And it's been a while since I've communicated in English. The day when I start thinking in Tamil is not far off. God forbid.

And all I can humanly blog about are theetu, maasam, "menses", mala and kannu theriya kabodhi.
*Shudder*
So I won't. Blog, I meant.

Sooner, than Later. But mostly, Later, y'all.

U04MB077-Love in the time of Examinations.

I wouldn't display my register number if my marks could be accessed.
My lame-ass college wouldn't have the intelligence to put up marks on the Internet. Very 1940-esque, my college, really.

Chicken Little feels like Chicken shit.

Post-exam blues? Blast from the past?

Or is the sky finally starting to, not fall down?

No. Sky is down, life is over, dark clouds and no silver lining, et cetera. Whew. Feels like home.

Paranoic insomniac. Insomnic paranoai.... er, the former.

Blogging when you can't think straight (due to almost-there sleep, nerves, misc.) is like blogging when you're sloshed or angry.
You're going to say more than you would want to. Atleast more than you should. And Digital memory never dies.
I would love to discuss the intricacies of human memory versus digital memory, but can't as it is a) boring, b) boring and c) 5 in the morning.

Bad case of exam nerves wrecking havoc on my stomach (or it could be the peanuts at midnight or the onion rings at 3).

Thought I'd drop in a line, give attendance here at Blogger, whatever.

I can't watch Ratatouille without thinking of Ratbite fever, Leptospirosis, Plague and thinking of how little I've prepared for my finals.
WHAT AM I DOING HERE?
Argh!!!!!!!!!!!

*after several pranayams, or atleast my version of pranayams*

Plan of Action:-
I'm exorcising my exam bhoot (no, not with Horlicks, ew) and then, hitting the bed and shutting my lids ( with the aid of Levator palpebrae superioris muscle or is it Orbicularis Oculi?) and opening them at the crack of noon. Fun stuff.

So long.

Exam-blah-lah-laahs!

Little have I mentioned about my education.
Even though it is part of the title itself.

I'm procrastinating.
I do not want to know about corneal ulcers. Which is a sure question!!! on my Ophthalmology finals.
I'd rather go for a walk, and have a cone ice. Cone ice, not cuppise, mind you.
Unfortunately, the world is filled with people who 'mummy' me (like one isn't enough).

So now I have to pretend I'm studying . Only I keep getting caught. Sleeping, not making love to my Ophthal text.
This is on the account of me doing combined-studies. Bad idea, by the way, folks. Now you have the additional guilt of letting one more person down.
Here's to you, Dr. Basak. Roast in hell, for having written this horrible book, when you could have just had a lucrative clinical practice, like other normal doctors.

Whatever. I'm Out-y.

Issh-tyle Uncheck.

Once upon a time, there were a group of girls who used to love doing things 16-year-old girls love doing; make-up, chocolate and rating boys.
These girls were over-critical of every single person who walked around.
'Ew, he's a 2.' 'A 2? Minus 2, more like!' 'Those pants. Those sad, sad pants meant to be thrown out in 1995. ' 'Okay, fake Gucci, fake Gucci, 5 o' clock position.'

Comments like these were part of their regular conversation.
And one day, these girls graduated from aforementioned Snob School and went on to universities to become engineers, architects, engineers, engineers, quacks and engineers. And the quack would be me. (Poli Daaktar).

On the first day of Quack School (fine, Medical College), I cried. Called my friends on conference call, and cried that I went to a Lower socio-economic Society college whilst they went to Anna, MCC and the like. My friends wondered aloud that LS people couldn't afford the daylight-robbery, over-exorbitant fee. And that I should give it another try. If only because the whopping capitation fee was non-refundable.

The crying was set off by the first person I saw in the classroom. This squint-eyed girl who had a white plastic flower on her hair, the kind you buy in Ranganathan street for two bucks (fine, five bucks). She sat in front of me, beads of sweat dotting her upper lip and forehead, taking notes diligently and she was blissfully unaware of her Body Odour.
I mentally switched off my olfactory receptors and turned to the Guys section. And immediately regretted it.
Guy 1: belonged in the '70s. White Jeetendra pants, pink-and-green shirt and a mullet hair cut.
Guy 2: I call him Ramarajan now. Self-explanatory. Chessboard shirt, with red and yellow squares instead of white and black squares. Karuppu MGR, I decided.
Guy 3: wore those kari-kadai bai (muslim butcher) blue-handkerchief as a bandana.
Guy 4, couldn't bear to see for another second. Ghastly memories.

Not that I claim that Vogue is my fashion bible or that I haven't had my fair share of bad hair days. I've been known to wear green eyeshadow to the operation theatre. And gaudy scarves, maroon lipstick, pink glitter in my hair...

Atleast I don't go around pretending I'm the height of cool. These people genuinely think they're hot/kool dukes (I'm guessing that means cool dudes.)

But I've gotten used to it now (if I can tolerate the meals plate in the dilaptated canteen, ANYTHING is possible).
I don't have to worry about my unwaxed arms. Or my flyaway hair. Or ugly salwars bought in the tenth standard. Or the calories in the bun-butter-jam (that's what you get in the rural area
where my crappy college is situated.)

Nothing matters much. I've let go of so many notions, pet peeves, idiosyncracies.

Just like I'm letting go of this post.

And this too, shall pass...

He's just not that into you.

That's a book title. One of the million self-help books that help you heal and get over him.
The ridiculousness that Men are has spawned a multi-million dollar industry (in the form of books, Kleenex and cupcakes.)

I'm going to tell you a boy meets girl story.

Boy meets Girl. Falls head-over-heels in Lust. Pursues Girl relentlessly. Manipulates, brainwashes and bribes the Girl into accepting his 'love.' Girl really does start liking boy, in that way only women can. Boy gets bored, or decides that this is not what he wants for now (for ever, actually). And then, Boy dumps, and wakes up the next day, and performs his daily ablutions not knowing that Girl is crying her heart out. A pattern that would continue for at the least, six months.

This I've seen happening many, many times with my own two myopic eyes, I swear.
These humgously talented, Beauty Paegent-type looks girls. Being miserable and mourning for very-ordinary Average Joes.

It irritates me to no small degree. It's like King Midas crying for a lost penny. I'm supposed to say something comforting? "I'm so sorry he dumped you; now you have to settle for some gorgeous person who is in love with you instead of this immature, insecure idiot?"
Get over it. Really.

He dumped you. He dumped you for being loyal, kind and intelligent. I'm telling you, he's finally realized that he could never match up to you. And he does not want to be Shrek to your Fiona.
And believe it or not, THIS TOO SHALL PASS.

Cry as much as you want. Cry, sob, spread snot on your sympathetic friend's shirt. Then, wipe your tears. Dance to Puddle of Mudd 'She Hates Me.' (substituting She with He, obviously). Eat your favourite comfort food (mine happens to be baked potato).
Dress up. Flirt outrageously. Paint the town red.

But beware. He's still not going to want you back. But there will be a time when you wouldn't want him to want you.

Worked for me.

What you're really scared of, is that you might get over him. You don't want to get over him, because of that addictive feeling, a feeling that you name Love.
Listen to your mothers. It is the work of the Devil. (Shaytaan, Iblees, says mine.)

And there's another book you might want to add to your iBook list.
Be Honest, You're Not That Into Him Either.
